U.S. Customs and Immigration puts 5-year old children on trial for deportation without attorneys.

October 3, 2013

These are vulnerable children as young as five years old who flee violence, extreme poverty, abuse and abandonment in their home countries of Mexico and Central America.   Others are hoping to earn money here to send home to their families.   This year there are 23,000 of them unaccompanied by adults.  They are given formal hearings to determine if they are here legally or illegally.  They have no kind of legal representation 99% of the time.  They are often deported back to dangerous and unhealthy places..

How can a country that even pretends to have due process of law and equal protection of the law do this?  Make life changing decisions about young children at hearings where an attorney for the United States presents a case aganist them to a judge.  And, they have no legal advice.  But, it happens year after year right here, and this year to 23,000.    Read all about it in the Wall Street Journal, Sept. 23, 2013..
